Which language does a customer see?
Each App Store country or region has a default language and sometimes additional supported languages. Apple says the language shown can depend on the App Store language for the customer's location, their device language settings, the languages you've added, and your primary language.
Some examples from Apple's table:
| Country or region | Default language | Additional languages |
|---|---|---|
| United States | English (US) | Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), French, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish (Mexico), Vietnamese |
| Germany | German | English (U.K.) |
| Switzerland | German | English (U.K.), French, Italian |
| Japan | Japanese | English (US) |
| Republic of Korea | Korean | English (U.K.) |
| Brazil | Portuguese (Brazil) | English (U.K.) |
| Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile | Spanish (Mexico) | English (U.K.) |
| Canada | English (Canada) | French (Canada) |
| India | English (U.K.) | Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu |
| Saudi Arabia, UAE | English (U.K.) | Arabic |
| Poland | English (U.K.) | Polish |
| China mainland | Simplified Chinese | English (U.K.) |
| Hong Kong, Taiwan | Chinese (Traditional) | English (U.K.) |
Two things stand out:
- Many countries default to English (U.K.), not English (U.S.). If you only have English (U.S.), consider adding English (U.K.) too.
- Latin America uses Spanish (Mexico); Spain uses Spanish (Spain). They're separate localizations.
Which languages should you start with?
There's no universal ranking, and we won't invent one. Start from your own data:
- Look at where your downloads and revenue already come from in App Store Connect.
- Check the default language of those countries in the table above.
- Localize those first, then the "additional languages" in your biggest markets.
